July - Caroline Earl
Caroline is an artist based in the Scottish Borders who creates a selection of individually hand painted and dyed scarves on a range of silk fabrics. Each scarf is individually created using vibrant silk dyes, worked using a variety of techniques across a selection of different silks: silk velvet, silk chiffon and habotai silk.
Some scarves are made using silk chiffon which is Nuno felted incorporating soft merino fibres and yarns, while other pieces are patterned using the Japanese technique of Shibori, which creates unique linear patterns. Some of the hand painted silk velvet scarves also incorporate an etching technique which adds a further dimension to the finished piece. Tiny beads, sequins, foils and micro beads add further decoration to some of the pieces.
In addition to producing hand painted scarves and pot pourri sachets, Caroline also paints pictures of the Borders landscapes in acrylics, which are then made into Limited Edition prints. Since retiring from teaching textile skills at venues all around the country Caroline is now able to spend time in her dedicated studio space producing her own work.
